BEAUTY or TRUTH

An exhibition by Pacific Rim Sculptors

Members of Pacific Rim Sculptors are encouraged to submit images of their three-dimensional artwork for consideration to be included in the exhibition BEAUTY or TRUTH.

BEAUTY or TRUTH

While it is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Merriam Webster defines it as “a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses” and truth as “that which is in accordance with fact or reality.” The Latin phrase Pulchritudo splendor veritatis (beauty is the splendor of truth) is thousands of years old, and suggests that beauty and truth are interrelated. John Keats famously declared “Beauty is truth, truth beauty, -- that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

As truth has been called into question in our current politically-charged era, we are seeking sculptural artworks that reference beauty or truth, ranging from the purely aesthetical to issue-related, or that address both.

ART WORKS DOWNTOWN  The exhibition will be held at Art Works Downtown’s 1337 Gallery 1337 from  April 23- June 11, 2021. Art Works Downtown, Marin County's premier non-profit art center, is located on Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael, CA.  http://www.artworksdowntown.org/

COVID 19 Due to Covid-19, the exhibition is unpredictable. If Art Works Downtown’s Gallery 1337 is unable to open for visitation, sculptures will be rotated in the windows as well as provided online. For this reason, the artwork must be smaller than the maximum dimensions to exhibit in the windows. Larger works may exhibit, but will likely not be shown in the gallery’s storefront windows.

VIRTUAL EXHIBITION + PHYSICAL EXHBITION All accepted artworks will be included in the virtual/online exhibition. Only artworks that meet the size and weight limitation criteria will be rotated into the gallery windows for the physical exhibition. (Please see SUBMISSION CRITERIA for details.)

Rotation of artworks featured in the Gallery windows will be at the discretion of the AWD staff. Artists will be notified of when their artwork is rotated into the windows.

If possible, Art Works Downtown will be open. Artists’ receptions will coincide with Second Friday Art Walk on Friday May 14 and Friday June 11, 5-8pm. If AWD is open for in-person visits, accepted artists are expected to attend both receptions. If closed, AWD will provide a limited capacity virtual Artist Symposium for the receptions.
